BREAKING: Alex Steen Granted Fifth Year of Eligibility

Florida State forward Alex Steen has been granted a fifth year of college eligibility by the Second Judicial Circuit in Leon County, clearing the way for him to compete in the 2026–27 season.
The decision marks a breakthrough for Steen after a legal battle that left his college basketball future uncertain. His request for a temporary injunction was denied in September, but Monday’s ruling gives him another opportunity to suit up for the Seminoles.
A Boost for Florida State’s Frontcourt
Steen averaged 6.8 points and a team-leading 5.8 rebounds while shooting 63.2% from the field last season. He appeared in 32 games after spending his first three college seasons at Florida Southern.
His return gives head coach Luke Loucks an experienced presence inside. Steen brings rebounding, efficient finishing and physicality around the basket, along with familiarity with the program.
That experience should also benefit Florida State’s younger frontcourt players as the Seminoles prepare for the upcoming season. His return should give Loucks more flexibility at power forward and center. Steen primarily played center last season, but at 6-foot-9, he was undersized against some opposing centers. A move to power forward could put him in more favorable matchups while giving Florida State additional lineup options.
One More Season in Tallahassee
Throughout the eligibility battle, Steen remained enrolled at Florida State and continued working out with the team. Loucks previously confirmed that the program had kept a roster spot available for him.
Now, Steen has the opportunity he spent the offseason fighting for: one more season of college basketball and another chance to contribute for Florida State.
This developing story will be updated as additional details become available.
