Florida State has reportedly fired defensive coordinator Tony White after less than two seasons with the program.

The move comes on the same day Florida State fired head coach Mike Norvell following the Seminoles’ 36–24 loss to Clemson. Former FSU quarterback Rick Stockstill has been named interim head coach.

White arrived at Florida State before the 2025 season as part of Norvell’s attempt to rebuild the program following a 2–10 campaign. He brought a strong reputation after previously coordinating successful defenses at Syracuse and Nebraska.

His first season in Tallahassee produced encouraging results, but the defense suffered a dramatic decline in 2026.

Florida State’s Defense Failed to Take the Next Step

Florida State finished 28th nationally in total defense during White’s first season, a significant improvement from the previous year.

The Seminoles were expected to build on that progress in 2026. Instead, the defense became one of the worst units in the country.

Through eight games, Florida State ranks 128th nationally in total defense. The Seminoles have allowed more than 530 yards in four different games, including 585 against SMU, 583 against Miami, 567 against Alabama and 537 against Louisville.

Those performances made it difficult for Florida State to consistently compete against its strongest opponents.

The defense also struggled to prevent explosive plays and finish tackles. Those problems appeared again against Clemson when quarterback Tait Reynolds escaped for a 79-yard touchdown on third-and-12, ending Florida State’s fourth-quarter comeback attempt.

Florida State entered the season with experienced players and expected the defense to become one of the team’s strengths. Instead, breakdowns in coverage, missed tackles and inconsistent execution became recurring problems.

The Seminoles have allowed opponents to control games with explosive plays and extended drives. Even when the defense created pressure, it often failed to finish the play or get off the field.

A coordinator cannot be blamed for every mistake, but Florida State’s defensive decline ultimately became impossible to ignore.

Another Major Change for Florida State

White’s reported dismissal adds to a day of major changes inside Florida State’s football program.

The Seminoles are now without their head coach and defensive coordinator with four regular-season games remaining. Stockstill will have to reorganize the coaching staff and determine who will call the defense for the rest of the season.

Florida State has not yet announced who will take over those responsibilities.

The immediate challenge will be preparing for Saturday’s road game against Boston College while keeping the players focused during a period of significant uncertainty.

Final Thoughts

Tony White arrived at Florida State with a proven track record and appeared to have the defense moving in the right direction after his first season.

However, the unit’s regression in 2026 played a major role in the Seminoles’ 3–5 start.

Firing White will not immediately fix Florida State’s defensive problems. The Seminoles still must improve their player development, tackling, communication and overall roster construction.

His reported dismissal represents another step in Florida State’s decision to begin rebuilding the football program. The university must now find a head coach capable of assembling a staff that can return the Seminoles to championship contention.
